Lauded for playing “with fire and commitment” by Schenectady’s Daily Gazette, flutist Jill Sokol is an established presence on the Northeast music scene. Jill is Second Flutist with the Hudson Valley Symphony Orchestra and freelances with the New Jersey Symphony, Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Allentown Symphony, Binghamton Symphony, Ridgefield Symphony and Greater Bridgeport Symphony.
In previous years, Jill performed with the New Haven, Westchester, and Albany Symphonies and was a member of the DiCapo Opera Theatre and Manhattan Chamber Orchestra. Jill has also performed with popular performers Josh Groban, Natalie Merchant, Jane Birkin, The Irish Tenors and The Who, and she works regularly in chamber music since performing at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and Aspen Music Festival. Additionally, she is Artistic Director of the SOMA Salon Concert Series which brings chamber music to New Jersey’s South Orange and Maplewood communities.
Jill is a strong advocate of new music. She received a grant to perform at the 2020 edition of Vassar College’s Modfest, and she has performed with the Locrian Chamber Players, Argento Chamber Ensemble, and SEM Ensemble. Her efforts in new music were recognized by The New York Times, which praised her quartet performance of Vladimir Tarnopolski’s “Scenes From the Real Life” as “serious fun.”
Jill supports music’s next generation of talent not only by championing the work of young composers, but also by teaching aspiring performers. She was on faculty at Skidmore College, served as instructor and performer with the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young People’s Concerts, and worked on educational outreach with the American Composers Orchestra. Currently, Jill is an Adjunct Professor at Kean University and she provides private flute instruction to K-12 students and adult learners throughout Northern, New Jersey.
After completing her undergraduate education at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, Jill earned her Master’s and Doctorate degrees at Peabody Conservatory of Music and Stony Brook University, respectively.
